A friend and I are making a wooden replica of the Bowie knife on display at the Alamo in San Antonio, TX. We need a handle turned out of walnut that is approximately 4 ¾” X 1” in size. See attached PDF drawing along with pictures of a replica metal Bowie knife and handle. We have traced actual photographs in AutoCAD and scaled them to the actual knife size. That is why the dimensions are unusual and to 4 decimal places. I can redraw to +/- 1/32” if that would help. We will also want an 1/8” hole drilled in the end of the handle to dowel the blade, hilt guard, and handle together.
We are making the blade and hilt guard on a CNC router, so we can make a lathe template for the handle. All we would need is your template material and size/dimension specification. I believe the project will require perfectly square walnut blanks which we can supply along with the template. I think that if everything is carefully done, we will have handle as pictured with identical flat ovals on the four sides. If so, we may attempt to refixture the turned handle and engrave a grid pattern.
We are interested in a high-quality turned handle and are willing to pay good money to have a talented craftsman do the work. We may want as many as 6-8 handles. Please contact me if you are interested with a price estimate. It will take us several weeks to make the blanks and I assume a template. We could also barter part of the price for a beautiful curly maple blade and cherry hilt guard.
Thanks,
John Harris
