Did you know that the Bylaws of the Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild specifies that the election of officers is conducted each year in April. In order to maintain continuity approximately one-half of the officers are up for election each year. It just so happens that this is the year for electing a new President. Vice President of Planning and two At-Large members of the Board. The good news is that three members have expressed an interest in running for the At-Large positions. This will give them an opportunity to become familiar with the operation of the Board and hopefully prepare them for future service in other more demanding positions in the future.
The not so good news is that we currently have no one who has expressed an interest in running for the positions of President and Vice President of Planning. These are critical positions which are extremely important to the continued wellbeing of the Guild. For your convenience I have copied from the Bylaws the stated duties of both positions. They are as follows:
1. President Duties: The duties of President include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Act as the principle executive officer.
b. Supervise and control the business and affairs of OVWG.
c. Call or cause to be scheduled meetings of the ExecutiveCommittee, Board of Directors, and the
membership.
d. Preside at all meetings of the Board, and monthly demonstration meetings.
e. Appoint committee chairs with the consent of the ExecutiveCommittee.
f. May serve as an ex-officio member of all committees but mayappoint another officer as a
stand-in as needed.
g. May remove the occupants of appointed positions with theconsent of the Executive Committee
2. Vice President of Programming (VPP) Duties: The duties of the VPP include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. In the absence of the President, or in the event of the President’s death, inability to serve, or refusal to act; the VPP shall perform the duties of the President. Assuming this is a temporary situation, the VPP when so acting shall perform his/her normal responsibilities as well as those of the President. If the President resigns or is removed, an election will be held per section VIII with candidate(s) identified via the normal nomination process per Article IX.
b. With input and consent of the Board, the VPP will recruit and manage arrangements for demonstrations done by members, demonstrations done by visiting professionals for monthly demonstration meetings, and workshops taught by visiting professionals. The VPP will assure that insurance requirements
are met through sanctioning of workshops, classes, events, and activities by the Board. The VPP will manage all details regarding the professional turners’ travel, hosting, monthly demonstration meeting preparation, enrollment for workshops, class assistants, and related items as needed.
c. The VPP will define and implement a policy for allowing members to host private events in the Learning Center.
d. The VPP will define, maintain, and manage a policy for members selling items at OVWG monthly demonstration meetings. The policy will address how permission is to be requested and approved.
e. The VPP shall recruit members for and Chair the Program Development Committee. This Committee will assist the VPP in selecting professional demonstrators and members to demonstrate for monthly demonstration meetings and to conduct classes. The VPP may delegate to Committee members such duties he/she deems appropriate.
f. The VPP will coordinate with the VPFE to make sure that all wood required for demonstrations, workshops, and classes is secured and prepared in advance.
While other Board positions are important, It is my opinion that these are of utmost importance to the continued growth and development of the Guild. The organization as you know it did not get this way without the leadership provided by many devoted members. If you have enjoyed demonstrations at monthly meetings; classes taught by professionals as well as by talented members; use of tools, equipment and guidance from monitors in open shops; and the friendships you have developed it may be time to think about stepping up and helping to provide the leadership needed to keep it going. I ask you to think seriously about what you are a friend might have to offer. You can make nominations to me or to any of the members of the Nomination Committee. They are: John Richey, Kathy O'Connell, Jim Nuckols, and Dave Kratzer.
Thanks,
Jerry Warner
