For all of you that may have known him, Johnny Bowman has  departed this earth.

Celebration of Johnny's life will be June 11th  2pm-4pm at McCoys located at 1130 Gurneyville Rd, Wilmington, OH 45177

With great sadness, we inform you of the passing of Johnny Bowman. Johnny was a long-time OVWG member and a master turner. A major guild supporter, he participated on numerous
committees including the Advisory, Monitors and Safety, and Nominating Committees, and was actively involved with our symposiums. His generosity will be remembered through the
countless, beautiful woodturnings donated for guild fundraisers and Beads of Courage. But above all, we will remember him as a kind person and good friend who was always willing to
help others. He freely shared his knowledge and supported the personal growth of other turners through jam sessions, demonstrations, and mentoring. His passing leaves a void in our
membership. We will later announce any plans for a celebration of his life. In the interim, condolences can be sent to his wife, and our guild president, Nancy Bowman at 1555 Redkey
Road, Winchester, OH, 45697. Johnny was also a member of the Southeastern Ohio Woodturners.

A Tribute to Johnny Bowman

Once in everyone’s lifetime you come across a person who touches your life for the better. Johnny Bowman was one of these people. From the first time I met him in an Open Shop to learn how to make traveling mugs I felt we would be lifelong friends. He came to my aide when my daughter had a life-threatening car accident. He taught me how to make many round things – finials, hollow forms, and mugs to name a few. He taught me how to cut trees for woodturning and together processed hundreds of blanks.  He shared his vast information on finishing turned pieces. All this came free of charge and with a great sense of joy.

 

Johnny had a great dry humor and was a fantastic made up story teller. I can recall receiving many emails and laughing until my sides hurt about his daily adventures on the “farm” – while my wife would be looking at me and saying “Got another Johnny email”.

 

Johnny would love to challenge me by putting a piece of wood in my truck and say – “Make something different”. I would turn it and his feedback to me was always “ok that looks good” but to my wife he would clammer about how I was finally getting it!!

 

I still have many once turned bowls in my garage that are labeled with a date (green turned), wood type and Johnny written on them – it will take me a while to pick one of them up but when I do I know I will remember this great person. I hope the next journey for Johnny is as successful as the one he shared with us.  Will miss you my friend.

Obituary

Johnny Lewis Bowman, 
age 68, passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 26, 2020.
He was born October 12, 1951 in Haysi, VA, son of the late Charles Luke & Ona (Gilbert) Bowman.
A US Army Vietnam War Era Veteran,  Johnny retired as a manufacturing engineer for the Avery Dennison Co., formerly known as Monarch Marking Systems.
 
Surviving are his loving wife- Nancy Sue Bowman;, seven brothers & sisters; several nieces and nephews and many life long friends. Contributions in Johnny's memory may be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN  38105.  To sign the online guest book, go to edgingtonfuneralhomes.com.
