Some of Tom's friends comments:

It is with sadness that I report the passing of Tom Cummings after battling chronic leukemia (LGL) for over 5 years. Tom leaves behind his wife Dottie, 3 adult boys and an adult daughter.
Tom was always interested in soccer and figured out how to turn a segmented soccer ball. He and I became fascinated with turning spheres and we worked together to develop 10 iterations of a ball jig.
Something that I just learned about Tom was that in high school he was rated the 3rd best roller speed skater in North America.
Tom will be missed by his friends in the Woodturning community.

John Cummings

I just wanted to thank the OVWG for their thoughts and prayers over the last few months.  My dad learned so much from so many members and he enjoyed the time he spent with his fellow woodworkers.  I went with him a time or two to Doc’s and I got to see firsthand how wonderful and helpful the members of this group are.  More importantly than the learning that my dad received, was the friendships that he developed with the OVWG members.

Thanks,

John Cummings

Obituary

John, better known to everyone as Tom, lived his life to the fullest with no regrets and the love of adventure. If it went in the air, Tom was all in… from parasailing, gliding to flying, he had no fear.  He was gifted with a mathematical mind, which he used every day. He would tell you, if you weren’t using yours. Tom made beautiful wood crafts that he shared with the world.  Traveling was also part of Tom’s life and on July 1, 2022, Tom went on his last trip with his family by his side.

John T. “Tom” Cummings, of Cincinnati, passed at the age of 82.  He was born on August 31, 1939, in Cincinnati, Ohio to John T. Cummings, Sr & Ruth (nee Howes) Cummings.  Tom attended Elder High School, where he played football.  During his high school years, his love of adventure took him to speed skating.  He was ranked 3rd in North America.  After graduating Elder High in 1959, he attended University of Cincinnati and immediately did an apprenticeship with G.E.  He was hired on and retired after 40 + years.  Before retirement and after retirement, he coached soccer for Elder and also for clubs in the Cincinnati area.  Tom met Diane Feucht in high school, and they married on September 15, 1963.  They were blessed with 4 children: John, Julie, Jay, & Jeff.  Tom and Diane had their hands full raising the three boys, and Julie was the easy one (at least that’s what she says.). There were many memories together as a family, and when Diane passed in 1999 it was hard on all of them.  Tom met Dottie Taylor at a support group, and he was later known as the “flower man” to Dottie’s daughters Holly & Jennifer.  On June 7, 2002, the Cummings family and the Taylor family blended and made their own Brady Bunch crew.

Tom’s favorite traveling adventures with Dottie were out West, Switzerland, Hawaii & the Mediteranean. The Cummings family vacation to Mexico in 2009 was also a memorable experience.

Tom was preceded in death by his first wife: Diane (Feucht) Cummings, parents: John T. Sr. & Ruth Cummings; siblings: Patricia Cummings & Ralph Cummings.

Tom is survived by his wife: Dottie (Durbin) Taylor Cummings; children: John (Deanna) Cummings, Julie Martini, Jay Cummings, Jeff (Allison) Cummings, Holly Taylor & Jennifer (Dan) Doyle; cherished grandchildren: Jonathan (Jessica), Megan (Matt), Shelby, Emily (Steven), Austin, Sierra, Matthew, Ryan, Josh, Nora, Everett, Maya, Benny, Abe, & Pearl;  great grandchildren: Jack, Mason, Teddy, Zachary, Hank, Kendall & Charlie.  He is also survived by many in-laws and nieces & nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, from 5 to 7 pm at Brater Winter Funeral Home, 138 Monitor Ave., Sayler Park, OH 45233.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at 10:30 am at St. Aloysius on the Ohio, 6218 Portage St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45233, with Fr. Benedict D. O’Cinnsealaigh officiating.  Reception to follow at Plague Hall.  Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery at 2:30 pm on Thursday.  Meet at the main gate and we will process back to the grave at 2:30 pm.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society or Hospice of Cincinnati.  The funeral home will be accepting donations during the visitation and the mass.  If you are unable to attend mail your donation to the funeral home.  Make check payable to the charity.  They will notify the family of your donation and forward donations together to the charities.
