Greg Gallegos Embellishment

Topic:

Surface Treatment -
Texturing, Carving and Coloring: Take your turned forms to the next level with this exploration in surface treatment.

Skill Level: You need to be very comfortable rounding a blank, mounting it in the chuck, and making controlled cuts with bowl & spindle gouges.

Tools/Materials for participants to bring (if available)tools you are comfortable using (bowl gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool).

Wood Requirements:

4"x4"x4" - small pots
6"x6"x6" - vessels
3"x10"x10" - small platter stock.
These pieces need not be wet if they are that's great but not necessary.
Wood species can be any close grain wood. Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Box Elder. We will be carving and embelling so having close grain wood will work perfect for that.

3 for the small pots
2 for the vessels
1 platter blank.

Bring your own if you want. LC will have a supply also.

Tool Requirements:

List of Carving tools used by Greg.
Bring them if you have them:
*Rotary tool i.e. Dremel, Foredom. (with Handpieces), Die grinder to fit larger burrs.
*Rotary burrs that I use are Saburrtooth burrs:
*Round burr varies sizes and grits
*flame burrs
*Manpa Tools cutters (I use the v cutter shape)
Diamond burrs - the smooth burrs - I use these for cleaning up the carved areas. I mainly use the round burrs. these fit into the dremel. 1/8' shank.
Embellishment supplies:
*Acrylic paint - I use Golden paints. I also use the heavy body acrylics. Colors can be whatever anyone wants to get and use.
*paint brushes - a variety pack from any local craft store is fine. no need to spend a ton on brushes.
* black chalk paint - the brand I use is Waverly Chalk paint...the color is called Ink. It can be purchased from Walmart.

Materials for participants to bring (if possible): Simple, pre-turned forms to explore texture (cylinder, egg, etc.) out of closed grain material (cherry, maple, basswood, poplar) NO OPEN GRAIN (ash, elm, oak, etc.) Woodburner, Rotary Carving Tool (i.e. Foredom), Paintbrushes, Acrylic paint (colors that you like)
